Kim Cole Wins Iowa Great Chalk Paint Give Away!

Kim Cole, YOU are the winner of the Iowa Great Chalk Paint Give Away!

Not only did you win this sleighful of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint products, but your name will be entered into the Jolie Design, worldwide distributor of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, drawing. That drawing is for a registration fee (or product equivalent) to a workshop on the Annie Sloan American Tour.

Here is what I know about Kim. She lives outside Indianola, Ia. She has also recently started painting furniture finds (yep, a bit of a junker in her!). Fortunately she sent me a couple photos of her work!

I think maybe Kim will enjoy adding some other colors from the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint palate and experimenting with some of the 50 different techniques and ideas in Annie's book 50 Quick and Easy Paint Transformations. Kim, email me and we will discuss delivery of your winnings!

We had literally hundreds of entries into the contest and I want to thank you all for becoming followers of Annie Sloan and TLC Vintage Collection. I hope to meet many of you and hope you can make it to the March workshop in Chicago. We will have a blast!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Everyone!

Project Christmas Presents: A running blog

4:15 pm I could have done another one, seriously! But I've got to leave for a reception!

Pick the before and after photo! LOL. Merry Christmas, Sis!

So here's how I finished up the table. Clear wax, then some dark wax, then some gold wax highlights. I will buff tomorrow. Who wouldn't like this under their tree! I will probably do something more with the pulls because they are kind of blending. So I will play with dark ax on the details a bit more tomorow. Cheers!

3:15 The blanket stand is complete! I will wait and buff tomorrow to give it a tougher finish and shine.

Compared to:

Detail:

Onward with the table.....

________________________________________________________

2:15 pm -- Second coat of Napoleonic on the blanket rack. So as soon as that is dry, will wax and distress it. See how quick this paint dries for you? I wax, then distress to eliminate dust from my environment. You just wipe off the loose bits that you have removed from the piece and then touch up with a bit of wax to seal the edges. I am distressing lightly on this because there is a layer of gold paint underneath that I want to show in places. Decided I will go with clear wax as the color of blue is about right to match The Blue Boy.

But I did adjust the pink for the second coat. I left the back with just the original pink Bubble Gum, so you could see the difference. The new one is called Barbie Pink because it reminds me of those little pink booklets of outfits you got with each Barbie clothes purchase when I was a kid. I cannot give you measurements as I added the red to my leftover pink....

I also think it is going to work a bit better with the dark blue of the drawer insides. My next decision is a color for the original drawer pulls. May go a deeper pink yet for those and then touch p with a little gold wax!

____________________________________________________________

12:45 pm -- Invented my pink; I call it Bubble Gum. 8 parts Pure White and 1 part Emperor's Silk. Did you know that is another super great thing about Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (ASCP)? Little to no black in the paints so you can combine and get beautiful new-to-you colors! No mud!

Like it? I love the details on these drawers and can't wait to figure out how to make them stand out. I may make the next coat a bit darker pink by adding Emperor's Silk to what is left of my mixture. Or I may add some Emperor's Silk to my clear wax. Did you know you can do that too? Just play with this paint!

And then there are this girl's gams! They will need some special treatment to stand out too!

You know what? I have not heard a word -- by phone, email or FB from my dear sis today. Do you suppose she is onto this project and lurking out there, watching my every post?? LOL. Just like when we were kids and would search the house for our presents! Boy, did we spoil a lot of surprises for ourselves!

________________________________________________

It's now 11:45 am and first coat on blanket rack and inside drawers. Napoleonic Blue is being used to match up with The Blue Boy. I had to shellac a smiley ink drawing someone left on the side of the table. This is so the ink does not bleed through my paint when I get to it. Unfortunately the side table has not seen a brush yet. I had some veneer on the drawers that had to be reglued. Problems, problems. I decided to drop the third item for today as I ran into so many issues to deal with -- not to mention that my husband just reminded me I have to be dressed and down town for the launch of the book I helped write this past year....more on that tomorrow....

_____________________________________________________________________________

It's 10:45 and I have hit a snag. Note to self: Not all old furniture is worth saving! Check it out closer before I buy. Yep, bad veneer -- on both, not just one piece! The shorter table has to be abandoned for today as it is so bad that it has to be removed. And under you can see the joints. hmmmmm. Other is workable but will take a while. I may just pull out the other table my sis liked that seems to be in a sounder state. The cuter tall table can still work for us.See what I've been struggling with for past hour.

Hopefully next time I check in here, I will have to set down a paint brush, instead of a chisel, in order to log in!
_________________________________________________________________________________

It's 9:45 am and I just brought the "presents" in their rough states from garage into kitchen. Yep! That's my paint workroom! You can use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint right on site -- no obnoxious odors to deal with. So I'm rolling up my sleeves. Here are the items: 2 mismatched bedside tables and a blanket rack. Sad, aren't they?

So check in every hour or two and see how it's coming along!

Shhhhhsh. Don't tell my sister I'm blogging her presents today!

Uh-Oh! Not ready for Christmas here!

2 days til our Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Give Away! Have you put your name in with me? If not check out yesterday's blog on how to still get some chances in.

Meanwhile, I've been dashing around and not getting everything done. So I am declaring it a Paint Day! I have a special someone who is getting furniture for her Christmas gift. Hopefully she is not reading my blog today. She is expecting the furniture that she already picked out "someday, when you get around to it." Well, why not for Christmas. It's my sister and I love her and since we shared a room for some 14 years or so, I guess it is appropriate she picked bedroom furniture!

She also picked out colors to match some family hand-me-downs errr....heirlooms, Mom's copies of

The Blue Boy and Pinkie. Now here is the things most people don't know. These two paintings were painted by two different painters about 25 years apart AND the costumes are 150 years apart in style! But the two were not linked til a collector purchased both of them around 1920! Yet most of us and the world associate the two because they are such a beautiful match! One critic considers them the "Romeo and Juliet of Rococo portraiture." But I digress....

So today I will take photos as I go and do a number of blog entries so you can see how efficient and fun it is to work with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. And the results, beautiful! Check back in!

Annie Sloan Demo House??? Can I do a house makeover???

Our house is a typical year 2000 suburban home. Medium oak woodwork everywhere, white vinyl panel doors, textured ceiling, two story, laminate wood floor, inexpensive white kitchen cupboards. The living area gets lots of use! And the kitchen? Well, let's just say I love to cook. Everything is pretty dated. The two rooms I like the most are the dining room which I feel I got "just right" and our bedroom that I did years ago in a deep blue Ralph Lauren suede paint finish. That was before my Annie Sloan Chalk Paint experience.

The redeeming part of this otherwise dull house is that it sits on .44 acres backing to woods and a park. Oh yes, I love to garden and am a Master Gardener. We have deer (often), occasional fox, ground hog, and a large variety of birds -- ranging from some very busy humming birds this year to turkey buzzards and bald eagle sitings!

So, now I am thinking ambitious. An Annie Sloan Demo House? Re-do room by my house using Annie Sloan products? From paint to wax to lacquer! Can I do it? Is it too ambitious? I'm thinking start small -- the ground floor guest bathroom. That will give me experience with walls, cabinet and floor. I'm excited and intimidated by the prospect -- but heaven knows this house needs a major makeover!

Only problem? So many color choices! That is why I will fall back on the color expert -- Annie herself! If you visit http://www.anniesloan.com/ you will discover that if you click on each color Annie gives combination advice! Or pick up one of her books.

Meanwhile get signed up for the workshop closest to you during the Annie Sloan American Tour I'll be at the Oak Brook workshop with lots of my colleagues. Will you be? Let me know! Good for another entry of your name into the Great Iowa Chalk Paint Give Away!

A Home for TLC Vintage? Your ideas, please.

My basemnt is filled with paint, wax, furniture, glassware and vintage decor. My 3 car garage can hold only one car! Old Grey has to sit out in the cold and shiver! I think my business needs its own home!

This is short and sweet today. But if you had your druthers, what part of town would I have my store to make it accessible and interesting for all my customers? Your ideas please.

Urbandale?
Valley Junction -- the old West Des Moines historical area with lots of antique stores?
Beaverdale -- also a cute and charming neighborhood
East Village -- the new and trendy part of the city?
Ingersoll-Grand Avenue corridor?
Sherman Hills?
Other?

Of course, while your input is important and will earn you another slip into my fishbowl for the giveaway....lots depends on timing, space and cost.

Here is what we will carry at TLC Vintage when it finds a new home....

All Annie Sloan products -- paint, wax, brushes, fabric, room fragrances, books and more as they roll out!
Workshops
Painted furniture
Painted decor
Antiques, glassware
Gifts -- most likely by Iowa artists
Also unfinished finds -- called "Treasures in Waiting" so you can pick out a piece of furniture and buy it if you can get to it before I do!

I would hope to contiue with a case of paint and products at the Brass Armadillo since they are open 9-9 7 days a week and so accessible from the freeway.

Send me your ideas!

What more would you like us to carry to go along with your Annie Sloan Chalk Paint?

Hi readers -- Sorry it is so late but a new client had come all the way from Council Bluffs this weekend to talk to me about chalk paint and to place a big order which included a couple dozen samples. Soooooo I was in the kitchen and at the dining table pouring out and labeling samples today!

Then my Mom (yep, she's 91) had bought us a cabinet I had been eyeing at the Brass Armadillo. It is already shabby chic'ed and black and tan and perfect in our entry as it matches the adjoining dining room. This is the beginning of the transformation of our house from 2000 urban subdivision cookie cutter interior to my Annie Sloan Chalk Pait demo house! No kidding! Everything needs re-doing after 12 years -- kitchen cabinets, walls, floors -- so why not a different stye. Stay tuned! But the cabinet is putting me in the mood for the transformation! So we moved a piece of furniture to her apartment and moved our new piece in!

So the topic of the day is what more would you like me to carry to help your Annie Sloan Chalk Paint experience. The Ultimate Wax Brushes sold out in a month and I have re-ordered and should have more this week. Here are some items I could carry -- just leave comments telling me what is important to you!

Metallic tinted wax for highlighting
Metallic foils
Buffing pads
Buffing brushes
Pouring spouts for paint cans
Variety of brushes for paint and wax
Rolls of cheese cloth

and workshops -- do you want me to hold a workshop?

Send me your ideas! Meanwhile sign up for the Annie Sloan tour workshop nearest you. Visit Annie Sloan American Tour. Your ideas are worth another slip in the drawing for my give away -- 2 cans of paint of your choice, 2 waxes, 2 small wax brushes, 2 small paint brushes, a color chart, and one of the two Annie books I carry!

Sharing Some Things I've learned about Chalk Paint!

Lots of little things running through my mind to tell people. So, thought today I'd jot some down for you because it seems I'm getting phone calls and emails every day now of folks just learning about Annie Sloan Chalk Paint!

Number 1: Never totally trust a color chart in a book or on line. Call me and we will discuss colors or come visit me and we will open cans or make sure you see a Hand Painted Color Chart! Why???

The print process and whatever they do with color on the web changes the true color of ASCP! (or probably any other paint for that matter). And sometimes the names can be a bit confusing. To me, Chateau Grey is really green (or is it just me?) and Country Grey is more tan or khaki. All the colors are beautiful, but maybe not quite what you think you are getting if looking at one of Annie's books.

Number 2: If you are planning to paint the next day, make sure the lid is tight and turn it upside down overnight. This will make it easier to make sure the paint is well mixed the next day and save you lots of stirring time! Some of the good stuff sinks to the bottom, so you need to stir it up, no matter how nice and creamy it looks when you open the can!

Number 3: Get this paint to the consistency you want to work with it. Don't be scared to add water. I pour off what I think I will use in a separate container and often add water so I can eliminate brush stroke lines. If you get it too thin, not to worry. Leave it open to the air and it will thicken up again.

Number 4: Think outside the box. I've always been fairly traditionalist in my style of home furnishings and clothes. I like the classics. I feel at ease with that in the business world. But there is this secret Bohemian side of me that loves my ratty jeans and tie dye hoodie (found at the Louisville Slugger Museum). I miss my Flower Power college days, wearing bandanas on my head and big dangly earings. Even my shabby chic pieces are conservative colors. I just saw this gypsy chest of drawers on line in wild combo of colors. I'm thinking about new color combos and experimentation....This should be interesting....

Number 5: Become a follower of my blog, visit Annie Sloan American Tour, check out my Dec 5 blog -- win chances for the gift basket and potential chance at a spot at one of Annie's American Tour workshops!

Roll Up Your Sleeves and Get Chalk Painting! 2012 Annie Sloan American Tour

Photo from Modern Country Style blogspot

I don't know about you, but I cannot wait to meet Annie Sloan in person! Already my favorite photos of this designer/inventor/artist of great paint are with her sleeves rolled up, doing what she loves to do -- share her knowledge of color!

I've found that the ease of working with this paint has proven to be an addiction! A few days without paint on my hands and without wearing my "paint clothes" and I am eager to clear the schedule and just paint! Which I did yesterday and ta-da!

This little table had languished at the mall with its original wood finish while other of my little painted tables found new homes! So I gave it the Annie treatment with "Cream" (the color I remember of real farm fresh cream!) and a stencil of ivy using "Versailles". Some distressing and clear and a tad of dark wax. All dressed up and back up for sale at the mall in one day.....but that was not all.

This little gal was also not selling with her dark brown color. Sooo...home she came for a treatment of "Duck Egg" and a touch of silver gilt wax along the edges. Nothing fancy, but oh so pretty. All in one day, PLUS I painted a Christmas present for someone -- but that is a secret!

Hmmm.....there is that curio cabinet calling out to me. Guess I need to roll up my sleeves. Meanwhile, go to my Dec 5 blog for rules to enter the Great Iowa Chalk Paint Giveaway! Love all your entries!

"Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity!" What Thoreau might say about Annie Sloan Chalk Paint -- LOL

Okay, taking quite a bit of literary license here, but were he alive today I am thinking Thoreau might just be interested in re-doing some old decor with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. The cans themselves say a lot. Simple and to the point!

Here is Annie's own lis about why Chalk Paint is a very special paint!

1. It's the BEST paint for painting furniture by a long way
2. You can use the paint by diluting it with water to make a wash to show the wood grain
3. You can use it as an impasto ( thickly) - leave the lid off to thicken
4. You can use it on any surface, indoors and out!
5. No need to prime or prepare
6. The colours are mixed intelligently and can be adapted and mixed into other colours for your use
7. It's a girls' paint, but boys can use it too.
8. It's flexible so you can be creative and change your mind
9. It allows your walls to breathe so it is perfect for cottage walls
10. Extremely low VOCs so it is good for the environment

And these are my additions:

11. Clean up with water, or soap and water!
12. Even a novice can produce something incredible
13. Dries quickly
14. Can do a major piece in one day -- do you hear me? one day -- Not a week!

So follow my December 5 blog to enter our Giveaway contest. If you can't wait to see if you win, shop Chalk Paint by calling me, visiting the Brass Armadillo in Des Moines or shopping at my website (button on right). Then check out and sign up for your space at the Annie Sloan American Tour in March 2012.

What's so Awesome about 2012 Annie Sloan American Tour?

Here's what!

The paint and Annie's own techniques! And that is what you will learn about. Above are just a couple of my clients wonderful pieces of furniture they did with Annie's Chalk Paint! I'm impressed. We are not talking professional decorators here......we are talking about people who just like old furniture and the chance to wield a paint brush and show some creativity!

You can do it too! Learn from the pro -- Annie Sloan who for over 25 years was a well guarded British secret! Annie's Chalk Paint first landed on these shores via Lisa Rickert who was looking for an easier way to restore the woodwork in a great old home after New Orleans was trying to recover from Hurrican Katrina! Lisa somehow discovered Annie Sloan and her paint and imported the paint at some cost just for her makeover project.

Well, the two decided North America needed Chalk Paint. As I understand it, the first retail paint hit the streets in mid 2010. Eighteen months later Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is taking the U.S. and Canada by storm. We have stockists and retailers in 35 states and 3 Canadian provinces. The paint is produced according to Annie's formula here in the U.S.

I can't tell you how much paint we have out there -- but I will tell you that since my inventory first arrived on August 27, 2011, I have re-ordered 3 times!

Scroll down to my December 5 blog and get signed up for our Great Iowa Paint Giveaway. Then get registered for the 2012 Annie Sloan American Tour at her closest stop to us -- a suburb of Chicago in March!

Barcelona Orange has arrived in Iowa!

Our newest hot color in the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint line is Barcelona Orange! It is now available to order through my website. Just go to the right of this page and click on Buy Chalk Paint!

To quote Annie Sloan herself: "Think of a a large ripe orange and this is the colour of Barcelona Orange. Luscious, bright and strong and a great accompaniment to to neutral tones such as our...Chateau Grey or to the cool silveriness of Paris Grey."

And if you haven't tried them yet -- don't forget the great additions to our line Coco, French Linen and Pure White! I can barely keep up with the demand! There are a lot of nurseries being painted with the Pure white, it seems!

Another new item that will be here within the next week is Annie Sloan's Laquer for painted floors. Just 1 to three coats of paint depending on the effect you want and then one or two coats of laquer! Boom -- a new floor. My wood floors will get the treatment as soon as I can get to it!
